13 Month Calendar

I'm thinking about making a calendar using bar code dingbats. Each month has to do with products we buy and use as consumers everyday and where they come from.
From nature to consumer:
1. cow to milk2. hen to eggs
3. tree to toilet paper
4. animal to meat
5. grapes to wine
6. wheat to bread
7. cotton to shirt
8. cocoa bean to chocolate
9. bee to honey
10. bone to jello
11. orange to juice
12. tomato to ketchup
13. brain to book

still thinking of some more examples

At Barns and Noble

it's so fun and therapeutic to go to the book store, read, and look at all the book cover and magazine designs, photos, and illustrations. Here are a few publications I find very inspirational:
1. bon appetit magazineI'm in love with this magazine.. the design is amazing...simple...clean...beautiful, and the photos are good enough to eat. I think I've actually salivated looking at the photos, as gross as that sounds, but it's true.
yum

2. Fruits

crazy japanese street fashion... what's going down on the streets of japan (though i think this is from an old issue)
...and Finland:
Helsinki street fashion

3. chuck palahniuk book covers are good... obviously

this one is definitely my favorite

4. I just finished reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and I really enjoyed it. it's written in the first-person perspective of a boy from england with asperger syndrome. The chapters numbers are all prime numbers, because he's a mathmatics enthusiast. It's really insightful and really detailed. You really get sucked into his world.
it's nice to look at the world through other people's eyes sometimes.

5. Blankets
a beautiful graphic novel

red pants alphabet

I bought these bright red pants a while ago at plato's closet...I'm not sure why, because I've never worn them and I can't think of an occasion where I would wear them, unless I was dressing up as meg white for halloween or something. Anyway, I was looking around and thinking about what I could use to make an alphabet and I saw those red pants and thought, why not...

First: I cut little rectangles and proceeded to cut letter shapes out

Second: I took pictures of each letter and imported them

Third: I live traced those letters. I was thinking about making some sort of print to fill the letters with ... or maybe printing the letters on linen, so they appear to be stitched in.

Illustrative alphabet attempts thus far

Playdough alphabet: I kind of liked the flash on a white paper background... it looks ghostly

Twizzler alphabet:
I'm a big fan of cheese, so I thought it might be fitting to make a burnt cheese alphabet. I was thinking of burning the cheese more and more as the alphabet progresses, so z would be burnt to a crisp.

Decorative paper cut outs.. I was also thinking about cutting fabric and scanning it in

Block of Type (on the block)

Civil Rights Exhibit

I went to the high today and saw the civil rights exhibit...

I thought this poster was very powerful

Time Magazine:

I'm not sure if I'm 100 percent happy with the design...too plain?
Maybe the face needs more dimension?

I was also thinking of replacing the "TIME" with "HOPE"

Nader In Progress

the lines on his face are organizations, laws, and acts in which Nader played an integral part in creating. Nader's stance on various issues is in red.

There's going to be a lot more type in the face.. layers and different tones.. so this is definitely a work in progress..
